Launch of a Québec Youth Consultation on Biodiversity

We are launching today, in collaboration with the Québec Youth Network for Biodiversity (GYBN Québec) and Jeunes pour l’intendance écologique (JIÉ), a major consultation aimed at better understanding the priorities, concerns, and aspirations of Québec’s youth regarding biodiversity.

Open to people aged 35 and under who live in Québec, this consultation aims to create a space where young people can make their voices heard and contribute to discussions about the future of biodiversity in Québec.

Creating a place for youth in biodiversity decision-making

Protecting biodiversity requires the mobilization of all sectors of society. Young people play an essential role in this mobilization and must be able to contribute to the decisions that will shape their future.

Through this consultation, we aim to better understand young people’s relationship with nature, their perspectives on biodiversity issues, the barriers limiting their engagement, and the transformations they would like to see in Québec.

The responses collected will help us better understand the realities experienced by young people and identify the levers needed to strengthen their participation in biodiversity action.

This process will also allow us to better integrate the priorities expressed by youth into our own work, but above all to work with and for young people. The recommendations resulting from the consultation will be made public so that young people themselves can bring them forward with decision-makers, particularly in the context of the next provincial election. We will also collaborate with them to ensure their voices are heard at the upcoming COP17 on biodiversity.

A three-phase consultation

The consultation will take place in three phases:

1. Online survey — July to September 2026

Young people aged 35 and under living in Québec are invited to complete an online questionnaire adapted to their realities.

The consultation explores topics including:

  • their relationship with nature and biodiversity;

  • their access to natural areas;

  • the role of education, training, and professional environments in integrating biodiversity considerations;

  • barriers and opportunities for their engagement;

  • their priorities and vision for the future.

The questionnaire takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete. No prior knowledge of biodiversity is required: there are no right or wrong answers. We want to hear young people’s experiences, perspectives, and ideas.

2. In-person consultation workshops — September 2026

Following the online survey, in-person consultation activities will be organized in selected regions of Québec to explore the results in greater depth and enable direct discussions with young people. These workshops will help deepen the understanding of key issues raised through the survey and identify concrete avenues for action.

3. Sharing the results — October 2026

The results of the consultation will be analyzed and shared through a report including recommendations. They will be shared with relevant stakeholders to contribute to discussions and actions aimed at strengthening youth engagement in favour of biodiversity.

An initiative carried out with committed partners
